Background
St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, California is a 525-bed, not-for-profit Catholic hospital dedicated to extending the healthcare ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange. Located in a dense urban area, St. Joseph Hospital serves an ethnically diverse population, including large Hispanic and Asian communities. The hospital provides the highest number of emergency room visits of any hospital in the region, and ranks fourth in the state of California. The hospital also ranks number one in the region and third in the state for surgical volume. The Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment at St. Joseph Hospital is the first of its kind in the region and one of few cancer centers in the nation offering the latest in diagnostics, treatment and clinical trials in one convenient, patient-friendly setting.

Patient Service Area
There are an estimated 1.2 million people residing in St. Joseph Hospital’s primary service area. Although individuals between the ages of 18-44 will continue to comprise the majority of the population, the most rapidly growing segment are individuals between the ages of 45-64. Growth of individuals over the age of 65 is also expected to outpace that of the overall population. Hispanics comprise the majority of the PSA at 52.4%, while Whites comprise 26.2% and Asians 17.5%. Cervical cancer is five times higher in Vietnamese women in the area compared with other ethnicities. Both Hispanics and Asians show lower rates of screening for breast, colorectal and cervical cancers than other groups.

Access and Outreach Initiatives
St. Joseph Hospital operates both fixed and mobile community health clinics. The fixed clinic logs approximately 14,000 annual visits and serves economically disadvantaged individuals who do not have health insurance coverage. The clinic provides low-cost medical and dental services for persons of all ages. The mobile clinics provide healthcare services to the large population of seasonal and migrant agricultural workers and their families offering primary medical and dental care services. The mobile clinics log approximately 3,000 medical visits, 3,000 educational visits and 2,000 dental visits annually. The hospital also sponsors an active cultural diversity program and maintains interpreter services in five languages: Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean, Russian and Farsi. In addition, the hospital has partnerships with City of Hope, the University of California at Irvine, and others for shared research, referral, second opinions and physician education and interchange.
